Diesel Repair FAQ's

Straight answers to common diesel performance, maintenance, and repair questions.

TROUBLESHOOTING & DIAGNOSTICS

  • Loss of power is usually fuel, air, turbo, or a sensor telling the truck to protect itself. Common causes are a restricted fuel filter, weak fuel pressure, a turbo not building boost, or an emissions-related issue. We diagnose the cause instead of guessing and replacing parts.

  • Limp mode is the truck limiting power to prevent damage. It can come from boost problems, fuel pressure issues, sensor faults, or emissions system faults. Clearing the code without finding the cause usually brings it right back. We scan it, test the system that’s actually failing, and repair that.

  • If it cranks but won’t start, it typically isn’t getting fuel, isn’t getting a good signal from a sensor or PCM, or has a timing/compression issue. On diesels we check fuel delivery, rail pressure, glow plug or grid heater function, and the electronics that allow the truck to fire. A no-start is a diagnosis job, not a parts-swapping job.

  • The color matters. Black smoke is often too much fuel or not enough air. White or gray smoke can be unburned fuel, coolant, or a cold-start issue. Blue smoke usually points to oil. We look at the turbo, injectors, fuel system, and cooling system so we fix the leak or the failed part, not just the symptom.

  • If the truck feels flat and isn’t making boost, the turbo, charge-air piping, wastegate or actuator, or a sensor may be the problem. Boost leaks and failed turbos are common. We test actual boost and inspect the system before recommending a turbo or related repair.

  • Look for loss of power, extra smoke, a whine or siren sound, oil at the turbo or intercooler pipes, or boost that won’t come up. A failing turbo can also take out other parts if it starts sending oil or debris through the engine. If you notice those symptoms, it needs to be checked.

  • Low rail pressure can come from a restricted fuel filter, a weak lift pump, air in the fuel, a failing high-pressure pump, leaking injectors, or contaminated fuel. Running it that way can damage the fuel system. We test supply pressure and rail pressure to find the weak point.

  • Rough idle, hard start, misfire, extra smoke, poor fuel mileage, or fuel in the oil can all point to injectors. Codes help, but they don’t always tell the whole story. We diagnose the fuel system so you’re not replacing injectors that aren’t the problem.

MAINTENANCE & SERVICE

  • Follow the truck’s service interval, and change them sooner if you tow, idle a lot, or get questionable fuel. A clogged filter is one of the most common reasons a diesel loses power or starts poorly. We replace fuel filters as part of routine diesel maintenance.

  • Stick to the manufacturer’s oil and filter schedule, then tighten it up if the truck works hard. Towing, farm use, fleet miles, or a lot of idle time. Regular oil, fuel filters, air filters, and inspections catch small problems before they become no-starts or engine work.

  • Yes. We diagnose and repair 1994.5 and up Ford Powerstroke, 2007.5 and up Ram Cummins, and 2001 and up GM Duramax trucks. That includes fuel systems, turbos, engines, electrical issues, and emissions-related diagnostics and repair.

  • Yes. We’re in Daleville and regularly work on trucks from Enterprise, Ozark, Dothan, Fort Rucker, and the rest of the Wiregrass. If you can get the truck to the shop, we can diagnose it.

6.7 POWERSTROKE FUEL-SYSTEM PROTECTION

  • The factory CP4 high-pressure fuel pump can fail and send metal through the entire fuel system. Dale County Diesel offers two S&S solutions depending on your truck, budget, and long-term plans.

    S&S DPK

    • Helps limit the damage

    • Keeps the factory CP4

    • Catches debris after a failure

    • Lower upfront cost

    • Less labor to install

    • Good budget-conscious option

    S&S DCR

    • Removes the CP4 failure point

    • Replaces the factory CP4

    • Uses an alternative high-pressure pump

    • Better long term protection

    • More labor and cost upfront

    • Ideal for work trucks and long term ownership

    IMPORTANT:

The DPK and DCR are not installed together.

    The DPK works with the factory CP4;

    the DCR replaces it.

    Need a little more information?

Both are for 6.7 Powerstroke trucks with the factory CP4 high-pressure fuel pump. That pump can fail and send metal through the fuel system, which can take out injectors, rails, and lines. The S&S DPK is a Disaster Prevention Kit. It keeps the factory CP4 and adds a bypass and extra filter so metal from a pump failure is caught instead of going through the rest of the fuel system. It does not stop the CP4 from failing. It just limits the damage if it does. It’s the lower-cost option and a smaller job. The S&S DCR replaces the CP4 with a different high-pressure pump. It’s designed to meet and often exceed factory output and does not require a tune. This route completely removes the CP4 flawed design from the system and replaces it with a widely tested solution. It’s the bigger job and the higher upfront cost. DPK pros: costs less, less labor, can save you from a full fuel-system replacement if the CP4 fails. DPK cons: the weak pump is still in the truck. The truck can still go down. You may still need a pump later. DCR pros: removes the CP4 as the failure point, better long-term option for a work truck or a truck you plan to keep. DCR cons: more money and more labor up front. They are not used together. The DPK is built around the CP4. Once a DCR is installed, that bypass kit isn’t needed. If you’re trying to decide which one makes sense for your truck, we can look at how you use it, mileage, and the condition of the fuel system and give you a straight recommendation.
